Crowns and Bridges
Crowns – Have you ever wondered what is a Crown or a Dental Cap actually is?
Over time teeth become weakened, it could be due to a filling breaking, or root canal treatment, it is vital to protect the remaining tooth structure. A crown is designed to fit over the remaining part of the prepared tooth and help to strengthen the tooth again.
There are many types of crowns, and depends on which is best for you and your lifestyle in terms of strength and longevity. This would all be discussed at the exam appointment, the crowns have two appointments.
The first is a long appointment where the tooth structure is reduced down and prepared for the impression. You are then give a temporary crown while your crown is prepared at a laboratory.
Two weeks later you return for the fitting of the crown and any adjustments that are needed.
Bridges are a structure between two crowns to fill a gap between missing teeth.
Bridges can help restore the ability to chew and speak, they help to main the shape of your face. As well as distributing the forces on our bite, it can also help prevent remaining teeth from drifting out of position.
Like crowns there are different types of Bridges depending on your needs:
Traditional Bridges – Involve creating a crown for the tooth or implant on either side of the missing tooth, with a pontic (replacement tooth) in between. Traditional bridges are the most common type of bridge and are made of either porcelain fused to metal or ceramics.
Cantilever bridges – are used when there are adjacent teeth on only one side of the missing tooth or teeth. These are made of plastic teeth and gums supported by a metal framework. Metal wings on each side of the bridge are bonded to your existing teeth. Bridges are prepared in the same way a crown is, the teeth on either side are shaped in appointment one before an impression is taken. A temporary bridge is placed and a second appointment is made two weeks later for fitting.
