Helping Nervous Patients

Dental anxiety is very common – but we can help!

If you find that you are becoming increasingly anxious and nervous when your dental appointment is due, don’t worry you are most certainly not alone. Around half of the UK has similar feelings, with some experiencing anxiety so much they may cancel an appointment unless the pain is unbearable.

Whilst we may not be able to understand exactly why we have, deep-seated, often illogical concerns about dental treatment. Whatever the reason, the team at Warwick Lodge Dental and Implant Centre are here to help you. We ensure you have as stress-free an appointment as possible.

Nervous patientWhat are the fears?

Before we discuss how we can help, there is some information that you may find useful. One of the biggest fear factors is that it will be painful. Modern local anesthesia means that you will not feel actual pain during a procedure. Some minor discomfort is possible. In most cases, people experience the anticipation of pain or pulling.

The ‘injection’ can be off-putting for some patients, however, this will ensure you do not feel the pain during the treatment. Some patients believe it hurts when the needle is inserted into the gum however this is a brief discomfort.

The sound of the drill is probably the one that causes the greatest anxiety amongst all nervous dental patients. This sound is caused by the high rotational speeds of the drill. It is this that allows procedures to progress quickly and effectively. Less noise would mean lower speeds and longer procedures.

Our friendly dentists and our sedation options

From the moment that you enter our Herne Bay dental practice, our team will do all that we can to help you relax. The friendly greeting from our team is sometimes enough for some patients to start to feel more at ease.  Our dentists work in a calm and relaxing manner and will explain the procedure in more detail if you wish. You will be told how to signal if you need to take a break during the procedure to compose yourself before it continues. Our team is happy to let you take a break when required.

For those whose dental anxiety is very high, and for those who need to undergo a lengthier procedure. we offer the option of dental sedation. This can be administered orally or intravenously. Unlike the old-style ‘gas’ this will not put you to sleep, but into a deeply relaxed state whilst fully conscious. Many patients also tell us that time seems to pass much faster when under sedation.

The sedative will remain in your system for around 24 hours and it’s therefore important that;

  • You bring a responsible adult to drive you home afterward
  • You don’t drive or use equipment at work that might be affected by this for a day or so.
